Relaxing and Exploring in Koh Samui

Posted on September 28, 2023September 4, 2024

Koh Samui was our first stop in Thailand. It is one of three large islands in the middle of the Gulf of Thailand.

Welcome to Thailand

After Singapore, the noise and chaos of Thailand was a bit jarring, especially all the scooters zooming around and a lack of sidewalks. But somehow it all works and everyone has been super friendly. It turns out we are here in low season so it has all been very laid back. We spent our first couple days relaxing and getting over jet lag.

Banana Fan Sea

We stayed at the Banana Fan Sea resort. It was quiet and comfortable with a swim up bar. We enjoyed cocktails in the infinity pool overlooking the Gulf of Thailand. They also had wonderful dinners on the beach with a fire show and live music. All the buffet decorations below were hand carved fruits and vegetables.

Fire shows are common and they have many different styles and techniques. We were mesmerized.

SUPing

Our resort had a couple SUPs we could use so we went out for a paddle. The wind was blowing away from shore so we had to work a bit to get back to our resort. The water was super warm so falling in had no consequences.

Tour Around Koh Samui

We took a guided tour of the sites on the eastern side of Koh Samui with Yankke (from Mr Samui Transport). He grew up on Koh Samui and had all sorts of great insights about the culture and history of the island. We visited a few temples, view points, and a waterfall. We also tried our hand at making a gong “sing.” Koh Samui is known for their flavorful coconuts. We had delicious coconut ice cream made from local coconuts.

The Roof

One of our favorite spots to to eat was The Roof. They have fantastic views of Koh Samui and fun drinks in a jug to share.

Moving on….

After a great visit to Koh Samui we took a ferry to Koh Tao. Stay tuned for our next blog!
